Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun, and Haitian music as well as American jazz and folk, Leyla McCalla rose to fame as a cellist with the Carolina Chocolate Drops before leaving in 2013 to pursue a solo career. Her music vibrates with three centuries of history yet feels strikingly fresh as she sings in French, Haitian Creole, and English and plays cello, tenor banjo, and guitar. McCalla is also a member of the supergroup Our Native Daughters along with Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, and Allison Russell.
