Impact of travel bans, a note from CEO Connie C. Chin

Dear friends,
As Boston’s champion for global music and artists, Global Arts Live is facing a moment unlike anything in our 35-year history. This year alone, we have lost three concerts due to our federal administration’s expanding travel bans. These cancellations are heartbreaking for our audiences and devastating for the artists who rely on touring for their livelihoods.
Most recently, we were forced to cancel a performance by Les Ballets Africains after artists from the Republic of Guinea were unable to obtain visas. Habib Koité, from Mali—whom we have welcomed to Boston 17 times since his first appearance with us in 2000—was forced to cancel his tour due to visa denials. We had been working to bring back Tinariwen, Tuareg artists from the Sahara region of southern Algeria and northern Mali, but their upcoming tour was abruptly halted because of visa issues.
These losses represent far more than missed events; they signal a troubling shift with real consequences for cultural exchange in our city and country. It is deeply disturbing that artists we have welcomed for decades are now being denied entry to the United States. These actions do not reflect the values that our community—or Global Arts Live—stand for.
And yet, even in this difficult moment, we continue to find hope in the power of art. Recently, watching Saha Gnawa blend North African Gnawa traditions with jazz in a sold-out house, I was reminded that live performance dissolves barriers, sparks connection, and brings people together in a spirit of discovery across cultures. When we gather in a room with artists who share their stories and heritage, something transformative happens—something that reminds us why this work matters.
To the artists who trust us with their work: we will continue to champion you and do everything within our power to welcome you to our stages.
To our members and audiences: thank you for sustaining us, for showing up, and for embracing the diversity of voices we present. Your belief in our mission keeps us steady during uncertain times.
As we have always said: music and dance know no borders. Together with you, we remain committed to connection, belonging, and the profound shared experience of live performance.
We look forward to seeing you again at a concert soon.
With gratitude and resolve,
CEO, Global Arts Live + The Platform
