Program: ODC/Dance Path of Miracles

ODC/Dance

featuring The Boston Cecilia
Path of Miracles
Boston premiere
October 7–9, 2021
First Church in Cambridge Congregational

Welcome to Path of Miracles. Tonight we will all, audience and performers together, take a journey through the First Church in Cambridge, Congretional.

This journey shares its inspiration and name with a 2005 choral work by British composer Joby Talbot. Performed a cappella by a group of singers, Path of Miracles describes the Camino de Santiago, the ancient Catholic pilgrimage across Northern Spain.

I first heard Talbot’s score in 2015 and loved it — so much so that I thought if I was to understand it, I should do the pilgrimage myself. In 2016, my husband and I did a six-week trek on the Camino del Norte route. It was revelatory in a way that I didn’t expect. On the Camino I routinely found people to be kind and helpful. This continues to be fundamentally reassuring to me.

Tonight’s performance is about your proximity to the music and the dancing. None of us will experience the same thing. Don’t worry about that. Revel in the moment; enjoy your own journey as we take this path together.

To Doug, who has supported my art habits for decades and walked the Camino with me. To Thea, who lives in the hearts of a family who has brought the passion of dance to thousands of people in San Francisco. To Mae, who taught me how to fold a crane and the power of task.
